Cultivate Good Behaviour In Your Child Using Chinese Classic
Parents have the obligation to and are responsible for their children’s upbringing. When a child possesses good behaviour, it represents that he is a respectable person raised by respectable parents.
While most parents feel that they can teach their children character development and good behaviour, what then do they base their teaching on?
I strongly believe that environment is one of the main factors that influence a child’s upbringing and character development. I conducted Chinese Enrichment Programmes using Chinese Classics Di Zi Gui (弟子规) for children of age 6 to 12 years old in various learning centres as well as People’s Association (PA) Community Centres and Residential Centres (RC) in Singapore.
I give assignments to my students to apply the knowledge that they learn in my class into daily practices and completion of simple household chores/tasks that require their parents’ acknowledgement.
However, Di Zi Gui <弟子规> is only another reference if parents do not practise what they preach.
Hence, to be effective in learning Di Zi Gui <弟子规>, I started a Di Zi Gui <弟子规> talk/workshop for parents. The objective is to equip parents with the essential knowledge and necessary resources to learn and practise Di Zi Gui with their children at home.
In this online course, parents, caregivers and teachers will learn all about using Di Zi Gui as the guiding principles in developing and cultivating moral values in young children.
Di Zi Gui, which is also known the Standards for being a Good Pupil and Child, is a well-known secular Chinese Classics based on the ancient teaching of the Chinese philosopher, Confucius. For more than 2,000 years, Confucius’ deeds had been admired by both government officials and the general public, and his character was emulated by many. His philosophy has become the mainstream of traditional Chinese culture and the basis of moral norms.
Di Zi Gui, or the Standards for being a Good Pupil and Child, emphasises the basic requisites for being a good person and guidelines for living in harmony with others. It covers core values of Respect, Responsibility, Resilience, Integrity, Care and Harmony.

Introduction To Character Education
Moral values guide each of us to be a responsible person. To respect, care and love each others. The values must be instilled to children from young. Confucius said: " A student should be dutiful to his parents and be respectful to elders. He should be trustworthy, loving all, be close to learn from people of virtue and compassion. After accomplishing all these, he should study and learn." This is an example of moral values taught by the ancient scholar, Confucius, that this course aims to translate and impart onto young children through parents, using Chinese Classics like "Di Zi Gui" written in the Qing Dynasty based on Confucius' teachings.
As parents, we may well spend a lot on improving our children’s academic results. However, that does not necessarily mean our children are learning the fundamental moral values they should have in life. Different parents view and measure good behaviour in their children differently. What are good moral values? What do parents do when they do not know what values to teach? While most parents feel that they can teach their children character development and good behaviour, what then do they base their teaching on? One good traditional classics that parents can use is Di Zi Gui 弟子规.

Introduction to DI ZI GUI 弟子规
DI ZI GUI is a Chinese Classic written in the form of three-worded verses containing sets of instructions for the purpose of instilling good moral values to our young.
DI ZI GUI 《弟子规》 stands for Standards for being a Good Pupil and Child. In Chinese, a DI ZI 弟子 means either a student or a child. In general, DI ZI refers to all human beings since we take on both the roles of a student or child in our life. 规 refers to the code of conduct or guiding principles.
Di Zi Gui has been used by the Chinese to teach moral values and character education to children since the Qing Dynasty.
DI ZI GUI is and has been an inspiring teaching material for the moral development of children in China for many years. Organised in a three-worded format and read rhythmically by young children, the book consists of the fundamental Asian moral values and ethical codes, which are extracted from the core principles of the Analects.
Di Zi Gui is divided into 7 Chapters:-

Meaning of Di Zi GUi
Di Zi Gui is based on the ancient teaching of the Chinese philosopher Confucius.
It emphasises the basic requisites for being a good person and guidelines for living in harmony with others.
Extracted from The Analects, Di Zi Gui outlines the basic guidelines for every child and student to become a good human being.
The second chapter states the principle and standard of conduct for the younger sibling towards his/her elder, as well as the proper behaviour for everyone towards theirs seniors and everybody else.
The third chapter teaches us how we should be cautious in whatever we do daily, whether we are interacting with people, matters or things.
The fourth chapter teaches us how to be a trustworthy person. It teaches us that we need to be cautious in the language we use, in our behavior, and in our thoughts.
