Introduction

1
Welcome to your new controller!

Your Party Mix may look complicated, but it's all pretty simple when you know how. In this lesson you'll get a quick overview of what all the parts do, as well as an introduction to how it plugs in to everything else - computer, speakers, headphones.

2
Downloading and installing Virtual DJ LE

Your Party Mix may look cool, but essentially it's just a dumb box of parts: It's the software where all the magic happens! So we need to get you all set up on your DJ software. In this lesson you'll download and install the supplied Virtual DJ LE program.

3
Connecting your controller, headphones and speakers

Let's take what we saw in the first lesson and make it happen - here you'll attach your headphones, speakers and laptop to complete your setup. By the time you're done, you'll have a complete DJ system ready to use.

4
Running Virtual DJ LE for the first time

As we've learned, your software is where the power lies in a laptop DJ setup. So here we'll get your copy of Virtual DJ LE up and running, and you'll get a detailed overview of every part of your interface, covering decks, mixer and music library.

5
How the Party Mix mirrors Virtual DJ LE

So the cool thing about using a DJ controller is that while all the clever stuff goes on in your laptop, you get intuitive, tactile control of the important stuff - just like a DJ on traditional gear does. In this lesson you'll learn how the physical controls on your Party Mix mirror what's going on onscreen.

Getting Your Music On

1
Where's my music?!

As well as being your "decks" and "mixer", your DJ software is your music library, too. But you need to tell it where your music is for that to work. In this lesson, you'll learn how to get music into your library, how to get it from the library onto your "decks", and how to use iTunes as part of this process if you wish.

2
How to use iTunes to organise your DJ library

For lots of reasons, many DJs choose to use iTunes in their music organisation. Here you'll learn about why this is the case, and some of the essential settings you need in iTunes to make sure that if this is how you choose to work, everything works flawlessly.

3
How to organise playlists in iTunes or Virtual DJ LE Lite

One of the absolute biggest secrets of successful DJing with laptops is that you should DJ from "playlists" rather than from your whole library. Playlists give you what to everyone else looks like a "sixth sense" for choosing the best tunes, every time. In this lesson, we'll get you started with your own.

4
Want more music? Here’s where to get it

Music is cheaper and more accessible than ever before in history, but you still need to know where to go to grab the latest sounds. In this lesson, we'll give you a handful of choices for shopping, so you can source everything from the latest chart hits to the hottest underground sounds.

Mixing

1
Executing your first ever mix

We're going to start coaching you in the basics of what a DJ actually does here. By the end of this lesson you'll have learned all the steps to doing your first mix from one track to another. Along the way you'll learn about all the controls needed to mix music, as well as how to preview tracks on your headphones.

2
Using Sync to match tempos of two songs and avoid trainwrecks

One of the biggest innovations that digital DJing brings to the (turn)table is the "sync" button, so now you know the mechanics of mixing from one track to the next, in this lesson we'll show you how to use sync to lock the tracks together for a smooth, professional blend.

3
Counting beats: The DJ’s mix success secret

So if just hitting "sync" is what it's all about, why do some digital DJs sound so awful? Part of the answer is that they haven't worked out the secret of counting beats. If that sounds complicated, fear not - in this lesson you'll learn that as long as you can count to four, it's easy. This is the next step in doing great mixes every time.

4
Mixing with Intros and Outros for smoother blends

So now you know how to choose the right beats to mix on, the next step is to know where in your tracks to mix. In this lesson, we'll explain how to match up the right parts of your songs to mix with, and you'll see (and hear) the difference it can make to your DJing.

Advanced

1
Using hot cues

In the days of turntables, the controls available to DJs for manipulating their music were pretty limited. But with digital gear, you have a whole host of extra buttons to make playing your music much simpler - even on the tiny Party Mix. In this lesson, you'll discover hot to use hot cues and performance pads to enhance your performance.

2
Why looping is your best friend

Again, back in the days of turntables, DJs had no choice but to play their tracks from beginning to end, and mix with what they had. But with looping, you can alter your tracks to make beatmixing much easier (among other things). In this lesson you'll learn all about auto looping, and how to do it manually.

3
Using EQs for a cleaner mix

EQ, or "equalisation", describes the controls used to boost or cut, for instance, the bass and treble of your songs. One of the the big uses for it is to adjust the overall balance of sound within a DJ mix, to make your mixing sound much better. In this lesson, you'll learn how it's done.

4
Mixing without synch

So, the sync button is undeniably a huge boon for digital DJs, but for several reasons, it doesn't guarantee great mixes every time. Moreover, not all gear even has such a function. So in this lesson, you'll get an introduction to the tried-and-tested way of mixing on ANY gear - manual beatmixing. It's a stepping stone to becoming a great DJ - and you can practise it right here on your Party Mix.

5
Using FX creatively

Effects, or "FX", describe features that let you alter the sound of your tracks - think echo, filters, flanger/phaser and so on. They are exciting digital DJ features, but as with all such functions, it pays to understand why to use them as well as how. This lesson is your "effects 101".

6
Using the sampler

Samplers let you take (or "sample") snippets of sounds and trigger them when you want. They can be useful for everything from simply playing DJ jingles (or idents) over your mixes, to creatively remixing whole songs. Here's how to access the sample functions of Virtual DJ from your Party Mix controller...

7
Light up the dancefloor

One of the unique features of your Party Mix is its built-in light show. From getting you into the mood when practising, to lighting up small house parties, it's a fun addition to the controller's feature set. In this lesson you'll learn how it works, and how to switch light presets to vary up your shows.
