  • What will you never compromise?

Your governing values are the values you live your life by. Everyone is different and everyone will have a different set of values. These values are often related to your spirituality, your culture or the way you were brought up by your parents. 

In order to get control of your life, you need to identify your values. This is a hard task to do, and it may take you several months to really identify all your values, but making a start on your list of values now, will help you to identify some of your deeper vales later. 

To help get you started, here are a few common values:

  • To be financially wise.
  • To always be dressed well.
  • To spend quality time with my family.
  • To be physically fit and healthy.
  • To be generous to others.
  • To do God’s work.
  • To always be honest.
  • To always do the right thing.
  • To always do my best in every endeavour.
  • To never blame others for my mistakes.
  • The best the best friend anyone could have.

Take some time now to think about what is important to you. Remember, this list may take several months to complete, but by making a start on it now it will help you to focus your mind on what is important to you as an individual and will help you to complete the list. 

Treat this as a work in progress. It took me around a year to complete my list!

Your vision of your future is something unique to you. No one has an identical vision and that is exactly the way it should be. We all come from different backgrounds, have experienced and witnessed different things. Your vision needs to be what you want out of life, not what you think other people want you to achieve. 

If you want to join the navy, but your parents want you to be a doctor or lawyer, then you need to have the difficult conversation with your parents. Your life, is not your parents’ life. The decisions you make now about your future will have a very profound impact on your life. If you create a vision that you think will please your parents, your friends or your partner you will never have enough motivation, energy and drive to achieve anything. This is personal. This is about you, your wants, dreams and desires. 

This is why thinking about what you want in your future life is so difficult. It is hard not to think about what our loved ones, our family and our friends want us to do. But this is what you have to do. You need to be very clear about what it is you want to achieve with your life, what lifestyle you want to live, who you want to spend your time with and what kind of work will motivate you to wake up with oodles of energy every morning. 

Having a vision for your life will take time. It may be something you have never thought about before. It may change over time as well. Many things you want to learn, try or buy today, may not be things you want to learn, try and buy in ten years time. But in my experience, if you start with the end — what you want to be doing in your final years — and work back to today you will find this process much easier.

Once you have your Vision Roadmap completed, you now need to convert what you have on there into plans and goals. This process will be much easier than discovering your vision. 

Take your Vision Road map and look at the time line. Begin with the things you want to achieve in the next twelve months and work out what you need to do to achieve those goals. 


Imagine on your Vision Road map you want to retire to live near a beautiful golf course and play golf every day. At the moment, you have only ever played golf a few times and you are very bad at it. Over the next twelve months you want to learn to play golf better. To do that you need to get some lessons. So, you would write down: “Learn to play golf properly by the end of March 2018”

Creating and planning goals is not easy. There are a number of steps required before you can come up with an action plan. However, to create goals that are achievable there are three things you need to know: 

  1. What do you want?
  2. Why do you want it?
  3. How are you going to achieve it?

This is what I call the “What, Why, How” goal planning method. Tony Robbins calls it “OPA”, or Outcome, Purpose, Action. Whatever you want to call it, it all comes down to the same thing. You need to know what it is you want, Why you want it, and how are you going to achieve it. 


Imagine your goal is to live in another country in the next five years. Let us look at how this would look like using the “What, Why, How” method:


To live in another country Within the next five years - By 2023


I want to live and experience another culture, to experience the wonders of another country’s food and to learn a new language and in the process become a better, wiser person


  • Research countries I could move to.
  • Decide which country I want to live in.
  • Find out what I require to obtain a visa to live there.
  • Do I need any special certification?
  • Save sufficient money to be able to support myself for one year.
  • Apply for the necessary visas.
  • Buy flight ticket.

Your hows will develop as you get closer to the deadline, they will become more specific. 

That is a simple example, but it does show you how you create goals that are clear and guides you toward achieving them. Once you have created a list of ‘hows’ you need to make sure each day you do one of those hows. 

To get you going with your goals, you should have at least one goal in each of these categories:

  • Financial/economic - retirement/income
  • Material things - house/car.
  • Personal development - education/self-learning

These three categories are not the only categories, but there are usually the ones easiest to start with. Of course there are others such as family, career and relationship goals you will need to come to at some point.

The reasons most people fail at achieving their goals is because they do not align their goals with their governing values. Often people also create a list of goals that do not align with each other. When you have a conflict either between your goals and your values or individual goals do not align, then you will fail to achieve any of your goals. You need to make sure your goals align with each other and with your values. 

For example, if one of your values is to build up a secure retirement fund for you and your family, yet one of your goals is to go on expensive, exotic holidays each year, then you have a conflict. Most people will take the short-term view and take the expensive, exotic holidays instead of putting away enough money to build a solid, secure retirement fund. You need to decide which is more important. Both cannot be achieved. 

Likewise, if one of your goals is to have an active, healthy lifestyle when you finally retire, yet, you smoke twenty cigarettes a day, drink heavily on a weekend and eat too much, you have a serious conflict. Your health is not going to be in good enough shape when you retire and the goal of an active, healthy retirement will never happen. Your goals and current lifestyle do not align. 

Once you have created your vision roadmap and established the goals you need to achieve your life’s vision, you need to take a good look at your values and goals to make sure everything aligns and is pointing in the right direction.

You have plenty of time to achieve all your goals. You do not have to achieve all your goals at once. Some goals will be short-term, others will be long-term. Try to focus on one or two goals per quarter. This helps to keep you focused on the important tasks, and does not slow down the achievement of your goals. Trying to achieve all your goals at once will dilute your resources and energy. It is far better to look at your vision and your goals and to create a road map towards the vision. 

Logical Sequencing

Look for a logical sequence when deciding which goals you want to work on. You should also take in to account how busy you are. if you are working on a project at work that is entering its final phase, you may find that working on some of your own bigger goals would not be achievable. You need to be realistic. You only have 24-hours per day. Choose what you do with those 24-hours wisely.

As Tony Robbins says, you have plenty of time. Trying to achieve everything all at once will only result in failure. Just focus on the tasks you have, and remember P.A.C.T - There’s plenty of time.

One of the best ways to get control of your life, is to work out what things you can turn in to positive habits. Habits are your best friend, but can also be your worst enemy. Being in the habit of waking up early to go out for five mile run every day would be thought of as a positive habit. Coming home from work, putting a ready meal in the microwave and flopping down on the sofa every night to consume a full bottle of wine is not a positive habit. 

One positive habit I have is to come home on a Friday night with a pizza, and some chocolate and watch a British detective drama. I only do it on a Friday night and it is something I look forward to. I consider it a reward for eating healthily all week and going through my daily reviews and planning my day every evening. However, if I did that every night, not only would I be well over 250 pounds in weight, I would most likely be approaching a rather early death. Not a good habit at all. 

Being healthy and fit is a governing value of mine and part of my vision for the future is to be running marathons well in to my eighties. I dream of working on into my nineties, much like The Duke Of Edinburgh and Henry Kissinger have done. To be able to do those things, I need to keep myself fit and healthy now. So, a habit I have is to exercise four to five times per week. 

Other good habits to develop are:

  • Reading a book every day.
  • Limiting the amount of time you spend on social media.
  • Waking up early.
  • Exercising regularly.
  • Doing the dishes every evening before going to bed.
  • Saving money every week.
  • Writing a daily journal.
  • Meditating every day.
  • Planning your day every evening before going to bed.
  • Telling your partner you love them. 

These are just a few examples and many may fit in with your governing values. You should also look at your goals and see what habits you can develop that will help you to achieve your goals. Fitness is one obvious example, but there may be other goals you have that require regular attention that a habit will really boost the speed at which you will achieve your goals.

Now you have your life plan planned and turned in to goals the final step to being the master of your life is to always know where you are in relation to when you want to be. 

To do that, you need to be reviewing your progress regularly. 

I am always reminded of the movie Apollo 13 when I think of tracking my goals. In that movie, when things have gone wrong and the Flight Director and the engineers are having a meeting about how to get the astronauts back home, The Flight Director, Gene Kranz, draws a diagram on the blackboard to show where the spacecraft is now and how far short it will be if they do not come up with a solution. That is the way you should be reviewing and measuring your performance against you goals. 

You have you Vision Road Map and you have your goals, now you can track your progress. While you will not likely be in a life or death struggle with your vision and your goals, you can use the strategy used by those flight engineers in the Apollo 13 mission. At the end of each week review what have done so far and how far short you are right now. Then ask yourself the question “what do I have to do the land this goal?”

Once you have the answer to that question, you should make sure that whatever it is you have to do, you put those tasks into your plan for the next week. 

Reviewing where you are, and where you need to be weekly, is where you will find the most motivation to keep going with your goals and move yourself closer toward your vision.

To achieve the life you want for yourself you need to set goals. To reach your goals you need to take action every day towards those goals. You don’t have to take action on all your goals every day, but you do need to be doing something every day that takes you a step closer to achieving at least one of those goals. 

The way to do this is to plan each day, so you maintain your focus on your ultimate life outcome.

This quote from Jim Rohn, means you only start the day when you have planned the day. Carefully planning your day means you maintain control over what you are doing and you make sure you are doing something every day that takes you closer towards your ultimate outcome. 

Now, you do not want to be planning every minute of every day. That would be unrealistic and impossible. You need to build in flexibility. But you do need to have one or two objectives for each day.

Your daily objectives do not need to be big. They can be small. The point is these objectives are important and are usually related to your governing values, goals or career progression. 

Planning your day, before you start your day focuses your mind on the important things that need doing in order for you to move towards achieving the vision you have for your life. 

Daily Review Checklist:

  • What appointments do I have tomorrow?
  • Do I need to prepare anything for these appointments?
  • Schedule some blocked out time for focused work
  • What objectives do I want to achieve tomorrow?
  • Is there anything coming up in the next few days I need to be aware of?
  • What can I do to move my goals further forward? 
  • Is there anything else I need to add?

  • Create your own daily review checklist that focuses your mind on the important things in your life.
  • Begin going through your checklist at the end of every day to plan the next day.

“Review your goals twice every day in order to be focused on achieving them.” - Les Brown

The daily review is where you close out the day. It is about making sure you leave nothing for tomorrow that can be done today, and allows you time to reflect on what you have achieved. 

When you combine the daily review with your daily planning to have a very powerful strategy to keep you moving forward and to give yourself added motivation. You can see what you have accomplished and where you fell down. You can then make sure when you plan tomorrow you do not make the same mistakes you made today. 

Some of the things you may wish to include in your daily review:

  • Have you replied to all your messages?
  • What did you accomplish on your goals today?
  • Have you written your journal?
  • Are there any big issues coming up in the next few days?
  • Are there any goals I am neglecting?

These are just a few things you may wish to add to your daily review. Your daily review should not take more than five or ten minutes to complete. But it is a worthwhile habit to get in to as it does help you to sleep better at night knowing you have had a productive day.

Your daily objectives are one or two things you need to do that are important to you and help you to move closer towards your goals. You should limit these to a maximum of two per day, and you should treat them as sacred. If you achieve nothing else, these objectives must be completed every day. 

Your daily objectives should be written out when you do your daily review. That way you are aware of what commitments you have for the next day and you can decide of which objectives you want to complete that will fit in with your schedule. 

Daily objectives could be:

  • Read a chapter of a book.
  • Tell my partner I love them.
  • Spend an hour with my daughter.
  • Exercise for one hour
  • Finish writing a chapter on my book.
  • Save $50.00.
  • Write 35 lines of code for the app I am creating.
  • Finish writing out my governing values.
  • Make ten sales calls.
  • Find solution to a current, pressing issue.

Your daily objectives do not need to be big. They can be small. The point is, these objectives are important and are related to your governing values, goals or career progression.

Time blocking is where you block out a certain amount of time each day to do the work that requires focus and concentration. Most people do work that requires this at some point in the day, yet many people struggle to find any time to do focused work. 

If you want to master your time, and ensure your important work gets done, you need to make sure that you block out some time each day to focus on that work. 

Time blocking is nothing new, it is something most focused content creators use every day to get important stuff done. Depending on how much work you need to get done, you could set one or two hours in the morning for focused work. A period of time where you turn off all notifications and just focus on the work in front of you. Whether it is the blog post you are writing, a presentation you are designing or the plans for a new business venture. You spend one hour of complete undistracted time, working on the most important work you have to do that day. If you are clever, you will repeat this process in the afternoon too. 

Most jobs outside of knowledge work jobs involve some form of time blocking. A surgeon performing surgery is not transplanting a kidney with one hand while responding to his boss’s email in the other. The pilot of an Airbus A380 is not performing her final approach while at the same time answering a question from her colleague in Dubai on Slack. The surgeon and pilot wouldn’t dream of allowing distractions interrupt important parts of their work. So why do so many information workers allow such interruptions in their work? 

I know many information workers will argue that part of their job is to be receptive to interruptions throughout the day. That may be the case, particularly if you work in customer service or other people focused work. But if your work also involves work that requires focus and quiet time, then it is your responsibility to find the time to do that work. 

I have been doing blocked focused work for over 10 years now, and I have never had anyone complain I did not answer the phone or replied to an email quickly enough. By giving myself this 2 hour period consistently, my clients and friends have learned there are likely to be a few periods in each day when I will not be responsive. And they are perfectly fine with it. I think many people believe they are so important that the world, or at least their company, will be destroyed if they don’t respond immediately to a message, phone call or email. Sorry to disappoint, but that is not true. Your value to your company and the world at large is not that you are responsive, but the work you bring to the world. That is your value. 

Next Actions

Every day, when you do your daily review, look at your calendar for the next day and schedule in one-hour in the morning and one-hour in the afternoon for focused work. It will be hard at first, but when you see the quantity and quality of your work increase, you will soon see for yourself the benefit of time blocking. 

During your Time Blocks:

  • Close down your email. 
  • Put your phone on “Do Not Disturb”. 
  • Turn off all other notifications.
  • Ask your colleagues to respect your blocked time.

Okay, I know I have taught you to build in time blocks to your day, but while having set periods of time each day to focus on the work that matters is important if you want to master your time, you also need to be flexible with your time. 

I record my YouTube videos early evening every Saturday. I also enjoy date nights with my wife. These are particularly enjoyable in the spring and autumn months as the weather is warm enough to sit outside a restaurant or a bar with our little dog and just chat. Sometimes we are only able to do this on a Saturday evening. Whenever these days come up, I am perfectly happy to change my schedule so I can enjoy some rest and relaxation time with my wife. I know I can record my videos on Sunday morning, so it is never a problem. 

Flexibility also means when you are exhausted you do not push yourself to do your remaining objective. You just take some time off and put off the objective to another day. There are seven days in a week, and something you are just not up to today, can be put off to another day in the week. You can always find time. 

The only warning I will give you is do not use being flexible as an excuse to put off something you need to do. Flexibility means being flexible with your schedule, not with the things you need to do. It is not always possible to do what you planned to do if you want to spend time with someone you value or care about. Rescheduling your calendar is perfectly okay.

Planning your day and setting your daily objectives are a good start. But if you find yourself filling your day with activities that on the surface seem important - your company’s sales report, your customer who is upset about her last order - then you are never going to build the life you desire. 

When you plan your day, your week and your month, you need to make sure at least ten to twenty percent of your activities are related to your goals and your vision. Of course there may be times when you are specifically busy on a project at work and these numbers may change, but the majority of your time you need to be making sure you are doing enough towards achieving your goals so you continue to make consistent progress. 

This is why is is important to bring together your daily review and you daily planning so you are always aware of where you are and where you need to be.

One of the ways to stay focused on what you want to achieve is to do monthly, quarterly and yearly reviews. During these reviews you look back at what you have achieved towards your goals and outcomes and decide what it is you want to achieve over the next month, quarter and year. 

You can use you notes app on your mobile phone, or a simple paper notebook to keep track of these. To review them and set your next objectives should not take too long. 

As with your daily objectives, do not set yourself too many objectives. The quote above from Tony Robbins emphasises a very important point, you have a lot more time than you imagine. Set a number of objectives you know you will be able to achieve given the work you have to do over the next month or two. If I know I have two workshops to deliver, a book to continue writing and a course to develop in a given month, I will not set myself too many objectives. It would be unlikely I would achieve them. Other months that are much quieter, I will add in a few more objectives. 

Quarterly and Annual Objectives

These act as milestones. They help you to make sure you are making progress towards your overall objectives. When you set up your annual objectives, make sure you use you Vision Roadmap to make sure each objective aligns with you overall goals.

 I set twelve annual objectives each December for the following year. All twelve are linked to my goals and I use them as milestones. The first quarter objectives are quite specific, the remaining quarters are more general. It is very hard to know what is going to be happening in three months time.

Some of your most carefully planned days and weeks are going to go badly wrong. There are so many things that can disrupt your plans that it would be a very long list if I tried to write them all here. 

At the time of writing this, Hurricane Harvey is blowing it’s way through Texas and no matter how much planning you may have done, a hurricane as severe are Hurricane Harvey will change your priorities in an instant. 

Part of mastering you time and life is the ability to be able to switch your priorities in an instance. When you have your life planned, you know exactly where you are heading it will never be a problem if you have to take a small diversion. You will always be able to find your way back to the right road. The problem of course if you are not in control and have no plan, you will have no idea where you are once the crisis or problem has moved on. 

So accept there will be days, even weeks, when things will not go as well as you want them to. The key is not to give up. Wait until your next weekly review, look at the damage, and plan out how you will get back on track. Falling off the wagon is a lot more common that you think.

It is okay to give yourself a day off, to re-charge your batteries, but remember the clock never stops ticking. If you have a big vision (and I hope you do) then you are going to need most of that time to set about doing the steps, the daily objectives and reaching your milestones. 

And remember, no matter what it is you are trying to achieve, you are going to need P.A.C.T — Patience, Action, Consistency and Time  You need to prepare yourself for that. Without these four elements, you are going to fail. Be patient, take action every day, remain consistent with your actions and allow yourself enough time to accomplish your goals. 

You are the master of your time. You decide where you spend it and what you do with it. If you have difficulty saying “no” to people, then learn how to say “no”. If you find yourself being over ambitious with your calendar and the things you try to accomplish each day, learn to prioritise better. Always look for ways you can improve yourself and your time management. 

How Long Does All This Reviewing Take?

This is a question I am frequently asked and the answer my surprise you. Once you have your systems in place, your checklists created and you have developed the right habits, then it will not take you any longer than ten to twenty minutes to review and plan your day. Reviewing and planning your week and month may take longer, but you are doing that much less often. 

If you find after one or two months you are spending more than thirty minutes reviewing and planning at the end of the day, then you are reviewing too much. Go back to the PDF file in the lecture on reviewing and planning your day and see if you can reduce some of the things you review. You may find you can plan and review some of those items in your weekly reviewing and planning sessions. 

Next Actions:

  • Go through your goals and see which action steps you can begin turning in to habits right now.
  • Schedule those action steps on your calendar or todo list to be done every day. 
  • Make sure you have up to two daily objectives that relate to your goals every day. (taking a rest from daily objectives occasionally is perfectly fine) 
  • Block off an hour or two every day for focused work.
  • Review your progress weekly / month and quarterly. If you are falling behind, make some adjustments to the time line or the way you are trying to do your action steps.
