A quick look to get us warmed up

Welcome to my course!

A quick word before we get started

I have done my best to be as accurate as possible throughout the course based on the current research, clinical trials and systematic reviews.

What would we do without M.R.I.'s. A lot less surgery that's for sure!

MRI's are quite miraculous and can be fabulous for certain conditions..except..

In the USA they do 700,00 arthroscopic knee surgeries per yr! But should they?

Arthroscopic surgery on the meniscus is the most common orthopedic procedure in the United States, performed about 700,000 times a year at an estimated cost of $4 billion in the USA. Let's take a look at a fascinating study where both groups had cartilage tears and a year later, most patients in both groups said their knees felt better.  The only problems are, one group received FAKE surgery!

Back pain and surgery-a startling look at the studies

Let's take a good hard look at the success rates of back surgery and see what the latest research is advising us to do.

Does the research support getting shoulder surgery?

Shoulder surgery. What does the research tell us about the efficacy of getting it?

Learning about chronic pain-this is very important

If you want to really understand how to help yourself or your clients with chronic pain, then you need to watch this lecture and study the literature in the resources from Greg Lehman. It will give you a much better understanding of why people duffer from pain and how pain occurs.

Lower back pain. A look at what works for it and what doesn't.

Lower back pain.It is time to take a good hard look at what works, what doesn't and what you should be recommending to your clients based on the available research.

Running is bad for your knees isn't it?

Running has to be bad for your knees. All of that jarring wearing away at your cartilage and joint surfaces. It just has to be! Doesn't it?

How to do knee exercises( and other joints) safely

When it comes to recommending exercises, here are the things that you should teach your clients. The exercises that had such remarkable results are neuromuscular exercises called GLA:D. Here is a video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=B2XMszQP_pY

Doing exercise is great if you want to lose weight-isn't it?

How effective is exercise when it comes to losing weight? Should we be more concentrated in the gym or in the kitchen?

It is known as 'the miracle cure' or 'wonder drug'. But what is it?

Throughout the course, you will see that this 'miracle cure' keeps coming up as being incredibly powerful at treating so many conditions and I highly recommend that you teach this to your clients and also implement it in your own life.

A 7 minute workout that is equivalent to doing hours of exercise.

Want to get more bang for your buck? What about a high intensity workout that last only 7 minutes but is equivalent to much more time that you would spend running or in the gym. And it is all based on science. Here is a link to the website https://7minuteworkout.jnj.com/

Kinesio Tape-Does it actually work?

The famous colorful tape that you see on athletes. It is a 200 million dollar a year industry. Some people absolutely swear by it. Is it backed by any evidence that it does what it clams to do?

Saunas. Are they good for us or not?

Saunas are very popular. Do they work though? There is a lot of research. Here I explain the results from some recent studies.

Busting back pain myths in 1 minute

Here I bust a few myths about back pain in just 1 minute

Stretch before exercise because it decreases your risk of injury. Or does it.

You should always stretch before you run or play sport. Otherwise, if you don't, you will race out onto the field and tear a muscle.Correct?

Should you do colon cleanses to remove toxins from your body?

Millions of dollars are spent on colon cleanses every year to detoxify the body. Should we be doing this?

Ultrasound speeds up the healing process. Doesn't it?

Ultrasound speeds up tissue healing. That is why millions of therapists use them on a daily basis. They work brilliantly otherwise we wouldn't use them would we?

What happens when you crack your knuckles and is it harmful?

What happens when you crack your knuckles? Will it give you arthritis? One man cracked the knuckles of his left hand ONLY for 60 years! What were his results?

Randomized Clinically Controlled trials-what are they?

Throughout the course, I use evidence to refer to. In other words, we look at the studies to know what works and what doesn't. Let's take a look at the process of how this is done.

The placebo effect- it is really fascinating

The placebo effect. In studies they generally have what is known as a control group where the people get fake medication, fake treatments or even fake surgery and then we look at the results. The placebo effect is essentially having something fake give the person real results. They are better because of their belief system. It is a fascinating thing.

We all know that bad sitting posture is bad for your back, right? Are you sure?

Slouching in your chair leads to back pain. Of course it does. We all know that poor posture will give you back pain. After all, I have been teaching this for years. I couldn't be wrong could I?

Let's take a look at in depth look at the back research and the treatments

Here is a fabulous document  that explains lower back pain treatments that are recommended and others that are not. It is in your resources and very detailed and has a mountain of research from around the world.

Are there really negative calorie foods to help you lose weight?

Are there really foods that we eat, like a stick of celery for example, that it takes more energy(calories) to digest it than there are in the stick of celery? Thus, the more celery we eat, the more weight we lose.

When is the best time to start rehab after an injury?

Let's say that you have a client, or you injure yourself, when should you start your stretching and strengthening exercises? The research shows you that it makes a big difference.

You should always do a cool-down after exercise because of..umm, er..

You should always do a cool-down after exercise, we know that.Don't we?

It's well known that after running a marathon, your immune system is depleted.

For years, people have 'known' that after running a marathon, you deplete your resources so much in your body that it weakens your immune system and you can easily get a cold. What has the latest research told us about this?

Here we look at what is recommended for type 2 diabetes-surprise, surprise!

Should we use a T.E.N.S machine for pain?

Many people use TENS machines. Otherwise known as transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation. Is it worth investing in one or recommending them to your clients with chronic pain? Should you buy one to use in your home or spa to treat people?

D.O.M.S. You know, you go to the gym or go hiking in the mountains and the a day or two later your muscles are screaming. Can massage actually help this or not?

Steroid injections for pain relief. What does the research tell us.

What are the effects of getting steroid injections? After all, many Doctors recommend them. Should we be getting them or recommending that our clients get them or not?

Detoxing, Juicing, alkalinizing your body to be healthy myth-explained.

The wonders of alkaline water?

Alkaline water. You pay a lot more money for it and the claims of it's effectiveness are amazing from curing cancer to curing migraines. Let's take a closer look.

Is glucosamine and chondroitin worth taking for joint health?

There have been lots of studies done on these and many people take them. Should you be recommending them to your clients? Do they work or don't they?

How does ibuprofen actually work?

Have you ever wondered just how anti-inflammatories work? Let's take a look.

X rays. Just what exactly are they and how do they work?

Did you know that x rays were invented purely by accident and now we do over 100 million a year. Let's take a closer look

Are antioxidants helpful for easing muscle pain?

A look at opioids

Topical anti inflammatory gels ( e.g. voltarin) Do they work?

You have seen them at the pharmacies. Topical anti-inflammatory gels and creams. Basically ibuprofen in a tube. But do they work? And if so, how well?

Millions of people take fish oil capsules to guard against heart disease. How effective are they at doing this? Should we all be taking them? Or not? What have the studies told us.
